In My Opinion: Trap Artists (2 Chainz)

2 Chainz is quickly becoming the most hotly debated breakthrough in Hip-Hop.

Like many other trap rappers, 2 Chainz has managed to divide camps and is either loved or hated by fans of the genre. Some claim he is talentless and bad for Hip-Hop, others help his debut album to reach number 1. Personally, I’m on both sides.

In My Opinion: Mixtapes

I woke up today, to the US and UK trending topic #BestMixtapesEver and I thought… Easy. Frank Ocean – Nostalgia Ultra and Kid Cudi – A Kid Named Cudi. But before I could finish the tweet, another 2 mixtapes came to mind – Hodgy’s Untitled EP and J. Cole Friday Night Lights. But then I felt I couldn’t leave out J. Cole’s other mixtapes and then even more artists came to mind. Before I knew it, I had run out of space.

It all got me thinking about just how strong a mixtape can be and how important they are to music in a day where just about anything can be downloaded for free.

In My Opinion: Is Hip-Hop Dead?

In 2006, one of the best rappers to have ever lived made a bold statement. Nas’ album title claimed Hip-Hop was dead.

Now Nas might have been throwing out a controversial statement just to drum up excitement and push album sales, but after a year full of “snap music” singles, I couldn’t blame him. No matter how catchy “Laffy Taffy” and “Snap Yo Fingers” were, they did nothing to prove to outsiders that Hip-Hop was anything more than simple, trashy lyrics that glorify women and somehow, spawn a dance.

And that’s the killer problem.
